Gateway to Efficiency

Read how BMJ streamlined their open access payment workflows with kriyadocs

Client Background

BMJ is a global healthcare knowledge provider, sharing knowledge and expertise to improve healthcare outcomes through its collection of over 60 journals, which include some of the most influential titles in their respective fields. BMJ is a pioneer of open access research and supports multiple publication models to make academic research freely accessible and discoverable for its readers.

BMJ has been using kriyadocs for a number of years to produce their journals, continuing to work towards improving their efficiency and streamlining their processes to publish high quality research and provide a fantastic experience to their authors. kriyadocs has been a constant partner in working closely with BMJ to help them deliver these outcomes.

Challenge

BMJ had to track article processing charges (APCs) for their open access articles throughout their lifecycle, at the same time supporting changes to payment updates or license information during the production process. With multiple publication models and myriad payment methods, the amount of manual work and parallel processes to track and maintain critical data consistently across systems became overwhelming.

Solution

For this project, BMJ collaborated with kriyadocs to design a framework for automating the interactions between the payment and production systems. By streamlining their open access payment workflows and having the process integrated with kriyadocs, BMJ’s production team has clear visibility of the payment status and actions to be taken. kriyadocs is inherently designed to integrate easily with any third-party applications such as hosting systems, payment platforms and content management systems.

Impact

In 2020, BMJ published 19,816 open access articles, saving approximately 300+ hours of manual work.
“One of the cornerstones of the long partnership with kriyadocs is the close collaboration for continuous improvement. Working together to ensure that processes are streamlined has made the experience more rewarding for all stakeholders.”
