Snapshot
A leading life sciences academic publisher of books partnered with Kriyadocs to strengthen quality control and predictability across its post-acceptance book production workflows. As content volumes and complexity increased, the publisher sought a more reliable way to identify issues earlier, reduce manual effort, and support scalable growth.
Quality, earlier in the workflow
64% growth in titles and 55% more pages processed through early validation and improved pre-production accuracy.
Challenge
As book production volumes grew, several issues began to surface during pre-production. These included AI-generated reference text that was invalid or unverifiable, broken or non-functional URLs in reference lists, and unreliable castoff reports caused by relying solely on word count for content containing multiple tables and figures.
Because these issues were often detected late in the workflow, they increased manual correction effort and introduced downstream delays.
Turning Point
The publisher implemented a flexible, platform-led pre-production service using the Kriyadocs production platform. Reference validation was integrated earlier in the workflow, with automated checks against authoritative sources such as PubMed and CrossRef conducted before typesetting. This enabled early identification of unlisted, uncited, and unverifiable references, significantly reducing rework later in production.
To improve castoff accuracy, a table-based page estimation method was introduced, calculating typeset page extent for tables separately rather than relying on word count alone. The pre-production service was designed to be modular, allowing the publisher to select individual deliverables or a comprehensive service depending on title requirements, including castoff reports, plagiarism checks, reference editing, and full pre-production review.
Impact
• Stronger reference integrity through early, automated validation
• More accurate and predictable castoff reporting, particularly for table- and figure-heavy content
• Reduced manual intervention and late-stage corrections, improving production efficiency
• ~64% increase in titles processed year over year, reflecting improved workflow scalability
• ~55% increase in total pages processed, supported by tighter pre-production controls
• A scalable foundation enabling continued innovation, including full-service project management for selected titles, evaluation of AI-generated alt-text for images, and the development of pre-submission capabilities for future book workflows
By strengthening pre-production controls and introducing intelligent automation, the publisher improved quality, predictability, and throughput across its post-acceptance workflows while remaining well positioned for future growth.
